# Fix Your Rate

Turn the variable rate on a loan you already have into a fixed one

If you are borrowing at a variable rate on Aave, Morpho or a similar protocol, your interest cost moves every day. **Fixed Rates** replaces that uncertainty with one rate for a set term.

The important part: **your loan does not move.** It stays exactly where it is, with the same protocol and the same collateral. Kairos does not touch it. You open a separate position alongside it whose payments rise and fall with the same rate your loan does — so when your borrowing cost goes up, the position pays you roughly the same amount back, and your net cost stays flat.

There is no refinancing, no migration, and nothing to unwind on the lending protocol.

## Before you start

You need a variable-rate borrow position already open somewhere, and the collateral token in your wallet to back the rate lock.

## Step 1 — Open Fixed Rates

Go to **Fixed Rates** in the navigation, or use **`Lock in Rate`** on the banner on the Markets page.

The page shows today's variable rate at the top so you can see what you are moving away from.

## Step 2 — Describe your loan

Kairos scans your wallet for borrow positions it recognises. If it finds exactly one it can work with, it fills everything in for you and shows a confirmation that it has been prefilled. Otherwise, fill in three fields:

* **`Your loan balance`** — how much you are borrowing, and in which asset
* **`Your borrow rate`** — which protocol and market your rate comes from
* **`Lock in a fixed rate for`** — how long you want the rate held

The term buttons are the available markets. Where two markets share a term, the button shows the leverage as well, for example `30d · 10x`.

## Step 3 — Read the quote

Once there is an amount in the box, the quote appears:

* **`Fixed rate you pay`** — your rate for the term, with a line telling you how far above or below today's variable rate it sits
* **`Protocol fee`** — the one-off cost of opening
* **`Required collateral`** — what you need to put up

{% hint style="info" %}
**`Required collateral` is not all margin.** It also includes the refundable liquidation bounty and the protocol fee. The collateral and liquidation bounty are returned to you at settlement, plus or minus any gains or losses from the swap.
{% endhint %}

A fixed rate above today's variable rate is normal and is not a bad deal — you are paying for certainty over the term, and can come out ahead if the variable rate rises during the term.

## Step 4 — Approve, then lock

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The approval does not carry straight through to the lock.** Click **`Approve`**, wait for it to confirm, then **click the button again** — it will now read **`Lock my rate`**. Two clicks, two transactions. If you approve and walk away, nothing is locked.
{% endhint %}

A **Rate locked!** confirmation shows your fixed rate, loan amount, rate source, term and the collateral you posted. **Go to Portfolio** takes you to the position.

## If the amount is rejected

* **Larger than the liquidity available** — there is not enough on the other side at that size right now. The message gives you the current maximum; try a smaller amount or a different term.
* **Too small to fix on this term** — below that market's minimum, which the message states.
* **The rate moved beyond the quote's tolerance** — rates shifted while you were signing. Try again.

## For the rest of the term

Your loan carries on as normal — keep servicing it where it is. The Kairos position sits alongside it and shows up in your **Portfolio**.

When the term ends, [settle the position](/using-kairos/settle-at-maturity.md) to release your collateral. If you want out sooner, most markets allow an [early exit](/using-kairos/early-exit.md).

{% hint style="warning" %}
A rate lock is a leveraged position, and it can be liquidated if rates move far enough against it before the term ends. The collateral you post is the most you can lose.
{% endhint %}

*Rates shown are estimates at the time of quoting and are not guaranteed.*

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.kairosswap.com/using-kairos/fix-your-rate.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
